Starting from the discussion of the dialectical relation between thought and language, this paper provides detailed coverage of Chinese and English thought pattern differences, their reflections on the two languages and text structure, and offers some techniques on how to do E-C translation well.Totally, this paper includes six parts. The first part is a general introduction aimed to clarify the purpose and significance of the research, to indicate that more efforts should be taken to the study of thought pattern, and to let know the rough idea and motive of this writing.The second part is to disclose the important role of thought pattern in foreign language learning, teaching and translation. Firstly, the writer provides the definition of thought pattern. Next comes to the analysis of dialectical relation between thought and language, covering two conflicted aspects: thought determines language or language determines thought. And then comes to the conclusion that thought pattern plays an important role in foreign language learning, teaching and translation.The third part extends some relevant theories about thought pattern and translation, which includes the discussions of language, thought and translation, contrastive linguistics & translation, sociolinguistics & translation, and pragmatics & translation.The fourth part analyzes the differences between Chinese and English thought patterns in detail and their reflections on languages and text structure. The differences can be shown hi three aspects, namely, image thought vs. abstract thought, synthetic thought vs. analytic thought, and subjective thought vs. objective thought.As the creative focus of this paper, the fifth part provides some techniques on how to do E-C translation well in accordance with the Chinese and English thought pattern differences, including "conversion", "division", "inversion", and "translation of passive voice" which is a unique feature of English language.The sixth part is the conclusion of this paper.
