There is a huge difference in the thought patterns of different nationalities; atypical example is the difference between English thought pattern and Chinese thoughtpattern. These differences are obviously and directly reflected by languages of Chineseand English in word formation, semantics, grammar, syntactic structure, etc. Ignoranceof the differences between Chinese thought pattern and English thought pattern addsdifficulties to native English speakers’ Chinese learning. If a native English speakerspoke or wrote in Chinese while thinking in English thought pattern, his Chinese wouldnot only have a strong English flavor but sometimes be erroneous. The thesis studieserrors of the Chinese used by native English speakers and researches reasons for errorsthrough contrastive analysis of differences between Chinese thought pattern and Englishthought pattern. Furthermore, it gives some useful teaching methods and suggestions forteaching Chinese as a foreign language in order to help native English speakers acquirestandard Chinese.
