Generally speaking, the center of Modern Chinese literature was in Beijing in the 1920s, and in Shanghai 1930s. Two literature groups, Beijing school and Shanghai school have been formed around Beijing and Shanghai. After the Anti-Japanese War broke out, Beijing and Shanghai, two modern literature centers, were pounded to pieces, Beijing school and Shanghai school were disintegrated during the war too. Later, the Kuomintang government moved its capital to Chongqing; the center of Modern Chinese Literature was transferred to Chongqing too.Owing to Chongqing's position as the wartime capital of the Kuomintang government, long after the war, the researchers asserted that the literature in Chongqing and other KMT- governing regions had made the mistake of right deviation. After the Cultural Revolution, the academic circle refuted this assertion, holding that the theme of literature in Chongqing as well as other KMT- governing regions is anti-darkness, revolution and patriotism, hi fact, these two views are both display of one thinking mode, which study the writers and works from the political and ideological point of view. It is no doubt a good angle, but studying only form this angle can bring much limitation: make us confused at how to express the concept of Anti-Japanese War literature, and prevent our further understanding of and research into this literature as well.hi the wartime, the first thing writers must face is the variation of the living environment and the transfer of living space. Accordingly, Modem Chinese Literature became different from the ones in the last two decades桞eijing school and Shanghai school.
