This essay deals with sayings in Dhyana's recorded utterance of Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty. The study is based on the diachronic and the synchronic analysis methods .We investigate the characteristics and try to expound some phenomena in Dhyana's recorded utterance.Firstly, this thesis sums up the achievements acquired by the seniors in the disciplinary category, the characteristics of form, the range and the difference between sayings and other idiomatic phrases .It also points out that the field of vision of sayings study is not wide, and is limited in the range of lexicology .At the same time, the study of its structure and meaning should be deepened .The source and evolution of sayings is exhaustively discussed and the causes of evolution are also revealed through diachronic and synchronic.Secondly, this thesis inquires into the characteristics of structure and meanings of sayings in Dhyana's utterance, pointing out the features of the structure: retrenched and expansive; separated and manifold; fixable and flexible. This thesis puts sayings into two different categories rone can be comprehended by the meanings of words and the other by the contents which hide in the meanings of words.Finally, the relationship between sayings and folk customs is expounded in this thesis .It is believed that sayings always follow a certain kind of custom. When sayings are used, sometimes only its meanings of the folk customs, while sometimes are not.
