There exists a queer phenomenon in the contemporary oil-painting, that is, regarding the pursuit of novelty, strangeness, abnormity as the only target that an artist should engage in. Most of those oil-paintings just follow and mimic the others so that lose the real value of the works and become a flash in the pan. This article analyses the contemporary significance in oil-painting from four aspects. Firstly, probe into the connotation and formation of uniqueness in oil-painting. This part mainly discusses the relationship between uniqueness and character, disposition and style. Secondly, discuss the contemporary cultural ethos and artistic setting. This part mainly discusses the position of arts in culture and some phenomina in contemporary artistic circles.As the centerof the article, the third part mainly states the significance of uniqueness in the contemporary artistic setting, from uniqueness and contemporary trend, uniqueness and naitonal culture. The forth part generalizes the significance of uniqueness in the contemporary cultural setting. Through these four parts, I hope oil-painting artists will be clear of their orientation and produce oil-paintings with national characteristics, so as to turn Chinese oil-paintings into a good carrier spreading oriental culture to all of the world.
