The Thought Of Environmental Sculpture In Modern Public Art

This thesis is composed of four parts. First of all, it probes into the public elements of urban environmental sculpture ,then expounds the language character of environmental sculpture in itself .Furthermore ,it researches into the relation between sculpture and environment deeply .Finally, it analyses the status quo of environmental design and sculpture to prospect the developing room and potential of environmental sculpture in the future . The first section Probe into the public character of environmental sculpture and the main elements that influence it. In the first division, expound that the principle of" benefiting others"is the core of the public character by living examples. In the second division, respectively expound the main factors that influence the public character. Political factor has great influence on the determination of the contents and form of environmental sculpture. The monumental or theme sculptures in the center of a city have much closer relation with politics. Their form and contents have different expression features in different times. Social factor is of great importance to environmental sculpture. The erection of an environmental sculpture is not just the business between the designer and the first party. Because its success depends on the inspection of society and the public at length. It represents the whole culture and quality accomplishment in a society. The proportion of cultural factor to environmental sculpture, that means, weather the local culture or the foreign culture has more influence on it, is decided by how much do we master our traditional culture and appreciate the foreign culture as well as the ability to express them through unique sculpture language. Geographical factor demands that we should do environmental art design according to the natural land-form of the environment and other factors which have formed for a long time, such as climate. The art design and construction of beauty should be carried under the prerequisite of not destroying natural environment. The second section Elaborate on the language character of environmental sculpture In the first division, simply expound the style and features of environmentalsculpture as well as their internal relations. In the second division, introduce the classification of environmental sculpture meticulously. Monumental sculpture should be designed and constructed directing at the subject to be commemorated .The creation of sculpture aims at commemorating some specific people or things. The contents of theme sculpture are arranged around the theme of a certain intention. Its highest advantage is that it makes full use of the special usage of sculpture art and expresses the thought which can not be expressed through architecture by art form and means. Decorative sculpture has the widest and commonest character of modern urban sculpture .It does not obviously seek the ideological and political contents, while it gives people the enjoyment of beauty by the super skills of art and changes of structure. Functional sculpture combines art with practicality. Furthermore, it lays particular emphasis on functional usage and makes sculpture have much more practical value. Displaying sculpture is mainly traditional shelf-sculpture created by artists indoors. This kind of sculpture put much emphasis on the creation itself, but little on environmental factor. Although many displaying works of great masters, perhaps not specially designed for a certain environment, people will consider what environment suits it much more.
