Many historians gradually pay more attention to missionary schools because of its special role in Sino-foreign cultural communications. Despite in central situation of missionary education, missionary middle schools aren't researched enough. This article discusses the major part of missionary middle education, i.e. Christian middle schools. From emerged in 1860s on, Christian middle schools had been conflicted with and adapted by modern Chinese society as becoming native and secular. In the earlier stage, religious education had been the major character of Christian middle schools, but the role of English teaching had been more and more important as the secular development. In addition, its system of educational charge and relief had had greater influences too. Although were controlled by Western churches all along, most graduates of Christian middle schools stood the front line of national salvation movement with deep patriotic feelings. After the foundation of New China, with strong semi-colonial color, Christian middle schools were taken over because contrary to new Marxist educational guideline.
