Literary interpretation is the coordination between the reader and the text in a historical sense. My thesis, with the sense of history as the foundation, is an attempt to interpret one of William Faulkner's major works: Light in August. It first comes to hermeneutics and reception theory to challenge various criteria of understanding and interpretation and concludes that the central role played in interpretation is historicity. It then goes on to the text itself to see how history makes different interpretations of Light in August in the subjects of race, women, fanaticism, structure, and language in which the summary of previous criticism is given together with my own evaluation.
