Faulkner In Chinese Translation And Chinese Contemporary Novels Of Faulkner Factors

Abstract: China's earliest translation and introduction of Faulkner happened in1934, but great interest to him started in the late 1970s and the early 1980s , after cold reception of him for about half a century. His work was well-suited for Chinese literary course and Chinese readers' expectation of that time. Besides, the translation has helped to make his work in conformity with contemprory Chinese literary course. Consuquently, he has strong impact on Contemporary Chinese Fiction.I name what was learnt from Faulkner and then reflected in Chinese Fictions as Faulkneristic features. This term has two meanings. On the one hand, it refers to the features of Faulker, but not of any similar ones of his contemprories, or those whose features are not so typical and obvious as his. On the other hand, the features can be traced by historic facts. Then, I will analyse Faulkneristic features from the following 3 aspects: his fictional world of Yoknapatawpha, the application of the stream of consciousness and the linguistic styles.Chapter 1 focuses on the native cultural context of Faulkner, in order to find out his unique artistic achievement and significance in the history of American literature.Chapter 2 concerns a detailed description of Faulkner's translation and introduction in China and the Chinese literary course in the 1970s and the early 1980s . In this part, I will focus on the commentary from Chinese scholars since it determines most people's understanding of Faulkner and the formation of Faulkneristic features.In Chapter 3, I will examine the contribution of translation activities to the understanding and popularizing of Faulkner, in hopes of making an analysis on choice and focus in different historical periods and cultural context to show the way Faulkner was brought into the literary discourse of that time , and how he influenced the writing of Yu Hua , Mo Yan and Su Tong.
