As the core of the text research, cohesion and coherence and their relationship are important subjects in the text analysis studies. And awareness of cohesion and coherence can help translators achieve a better and full comprehension of the texts and provide a solid basis for translators to produce a translation functionally equivalent to the original one in varying degrees. This report is based on my English-Chinese translation practice of Chapter 1 of An Intercultural Approach to English Teaching,a monograph written by John Corbett in English Department of Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Macau. The chapter translated contains a great number of long and difficult sentences with logic relations clearly manifested in the whole text.In order to understand the content of Chapter 1 better and to produce an accurate corresponding Chinese version, the author of this report explores the comprehension of original text guided by Cohesion and Coherence Theory and related achievements by scholars both at home and abroad, and then,on the basis of that, provides a Chinese translation of it,a detailed analysis of typical cases, and a discussion of translation strategies employed in the translation process. This report is comprised of four parts:the first part serves as the introduction which includes the research background of this study, the introduction to materials translated and the significance of the study;the second part is the literature review, introducing researches on cohesion and coherence both at home and abroad, and the application of this theory to translation;the third part where the author briefly introduces cohesion and coherence theory proposed by Halliday&Hassan and selects 20 examples and analyzes them in terms of cohesion devices, and explores the translation strategies to be taken in elaboration of correspondence or non-correspondence between ST and TT regarding the grammatical cohesive devices—reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction; The last part is the conclusion tentatively drawn. That is,in translation, the translator should have proper consciousness of the texture of,and a holistic view over, the materials to be translated, and create a proper translation based on that.In addition, due attention should be paid to identical or different idiomatic uses of cohesive ties in both the source language and culture and the target ones so that proper translation strategies to solve these similarities or dissimilarities could be employed successfully.
