The Influence Of Ideology To English-to-Chinese Literary Translation

Based on the theory of rewriting, the thesis aims at exploring the influences of ideology to English-to-Chinese (E/C) literary translation and the representation of the influences in literary works.In order to lay a solid foundation of the analysis, case studies will be done on two Chinese translations of David Copperfield, a novel written by Charles Dickens. The two translations are Lin Shu's Kuairou Yusheng Shu and Shi Pinshan's Kuairou Yusheng Lu. The two dominant ideologies of the society in which the two translations emerges, the ideology of Lin Shu, and the dominant poetics of the two literary systems are analyzed, so as to find out the ideological and poetological influence exerted on E/C literary translation. The two translations' texts were examined so that the representation of the influences can be found.According to the evidence found, the thesis argues that there are two main factors that directly influence E/C literary translation-the translator's ideology and the dominant poetics. The influences embodied in the translation text can be deleting the detail, adding extra description and changing the narration of the original text. Besides, poetics can also decide the choice of a translation to be published.
