Translator's Subjectivity

Andre Lefevere holds that the translation is mainly manipulated by ideology and poetics in the target culture. Although the ideology and poetics include both the social one and that of translator, it's obvious that Lefevere lays his emphasis on the influence of the social ideology and poetics on the translator and then the translator. In this sense, translator is manipulated by the target culture, with his ideology and poetics under the constraint of the society and culture. This paper is on one hand a case study of Lefevere's argument, and on the hand lays the emphasis on the translator's own ideology and poetics, which is mainly analyzed as the result of individual life experience, education, aesthetic preference, disposition and linguistic competence. The dissertation hypothesizes that the translator is not both manipulated and manipulating in the translation.In the first chapter, the author introduces the core concept of subject and subjectivity in translation. Then, the author elaborates the three significance of this dissertation. The first significance is that this paper is a case study of Lefevere's rewriting theory. The second one is a research on translator's subjectivity from the cultural perspective based on the rewriting theory. The third one is a contribution to the research on Zhang Guruo.In the second chapter, the author revisits the development of research on the translator. First of all, there is a brief review of the history of invisible translator. Then, the review moved into more detailed researches on translator's subjectivity, increasingly important since the "culture turn" in 1970s. The latter part of review is conducted from different theories, the philosophical theories (phenomenal theory, hermeneutics theory, reader's response theory, deconstruction theory), and the theories concerned in translation studies (poly-system theory and rewriting theory), and the skopostheory, one of the functionalism theories.In the third chapter, it's a brief introduction of the part of rewriting theory, which covers the translation.
