This thesis attempts to incorporate Roman Ingarden's text strata theory from literature studies into the practice of translation criticism on Chinese poetry renditions. By means of demonstrations of translation criticism in regard to each stratum articulated in the text strata theory, the research aims at a model for translation criticism of the same type, on which the translation critic may base his criticizing operation. The thesis first establishes the research subject and defines the nature of the study by fitting it in a self-proposed classification of translation criticism. Then it employs perspectives from ancient Chinese literary theories to furnish theoretical foundations for the application of a literary theory into the practice of translation criticism. Next the thesis presents a review of the literatures related to the research subject and offers an introduction to the text strata theory in comparison to them in order to identify its specific features that are particularly suited to what this research sets out to deal with. To follow are the case studies regarding the separate strata and the four strata as a whole, serving as demonstrations of possible ways for doing translation criticism on Chinese poetry renditions. In conclusion, the thesis reflects on the translation criticism model forged on the basis of the text strata theory and the limitations of the study to suggest approaches for further researches.
