From the beginning of 1980's on, language teachers and researchers paid increasing attention to the research of L2 writing. Of all the researches so far, studies on the relationship between thinking/planning in L2 and its impact on L2 writing performance are sadly lacking and the problem with those studies is that they are small-scaled and exploratory. So the influences of LI planning/thinking on L2 writing are still a controversial problem. The present research will also deal with it and explore influences of intended L1 planning on L2 writing performance. There are five parts in the thesis. Chapter one reveals the purpose, the value and the background of this research. Chapter two presents a general review of relative literature. Concerned with the study itself, chapter three and chapter four are the focus of the thesis. Test and questionnaire are both employed in the study to collect data and analyze the results. The study is aimed mainly to prove whether L1 (Chinese) influences L2 (English) greatly and whether the influence isn't negative. By means of quantitative and qualitative analyses the results show that the language style of essays using Chinese planning is a little more complex than that using English planning and the essays using Chinese planning are scored a little higher than those using English planning in the rating. However, the present researcher finds that the differences between the two groups in this study aren't very great and gives according explanations for the findings. Finally, the present researcher draws the conclusion that though the data collected from the two groups fail to reveal great difference, it is still important to show the tendency that LI (Chinese) doesn't influence L2 (English) writing negatively.
