Spatial ability is mostly composed of spatial orientation and spatial visualization. It also is the vital part of intelligent structure. Psychometrics on spatial visualization plays a major role in the study of the aerospace psychology. Probing into cognitive processing abilities and characters of spatial visualization is not only to play an important part in understanding human behaviors with spatial ability, but also to be of great value to improvement of selection and evaluation of pilots and astronauts. This study, through studying cognitive processing strategies for meaning line patterns, aims at compiling validity test measuring "Closure speed" ability of spatial visualization, and provides us with theories of selection and evaluation of pilots and astronauts.This study is composed of three parts: The first is to extract visual features of meaning line patterns, to weigh them and to explore processing strategy of meaning line patterns when recognizing them.The second is mostly focused on item analysis of degraded meaning line patterns that are composed of visual features, and then pick-up patterns which own right difficulty and discrimination in order to compile the Picture Completion test. The third is concerned with the reliability and validity of the Picture Completion test, and analysis of the age effects in the "Closure Speed" ability. The main results are as follows:1. If recognizing meaning line patterns, you must firstly extract and recognize the visual features of patterns. Visual features extracted mostly are the joints and cusps of meaning line patterns. The patterns that are composed of visual features extracted are recognized more easily than them of no-visual features. In spite of visual features or no-visual feature patterns, the more visual features the patterns have, the more it was recognize.2. When recognizing patterns, man has a strategy of ordering the visual features of meaning line patterns. That is to say, the different weight of the visual features has different influence on recognition of meaning line patterns.3. As to recognize the degraded patterns, the amount of absent visual features and lost information among them plays a role of recognizing the degraded patterns. They independently have effect on recognizing degraded patterns each other.4. Reliability, construct validity and criterion-related validity of the Picture Completion compiled by us are very good. Therefore, this test can effectually measure the "Closure speed" ability.5. It exists in "age effects" that is "Closure speed" ability. Namely, the older their ages are, the lower their performances of the Picture Completion test are.6. It is clear that our research is not only to explore the theoretical basis for cognitive processing of meaning line patterns, but also to compile the "Closure speed" ability test. Furthermore, this research has further improvement of pilots selecting and evaluatingsystem.
