Li jie-ren, a writer from Sichuan with studying experience in France, is the very merger of two traditions: Bashu culture and world culture. As a sort of mother culture, Bashu culture is the "collective unconsciousness " stored in Li's mind, and unconsciously sets his life style and thinking ways, influences his cultural traits and aesthetic creation, thus forms his strong and clear local colors in his works. As a sort of foreign culture, world culture (mainly French culture) also exerts great influence on his novel writing. This influence, results from Li's conscious learning and borrowing from the world culture, which experiences a process of indirect contact through translated works to direct reading of the original texts. Among world culture, Li jieren's greatest interest rests on French realism and naturalism, and he treats two as a whole of historical association, especially, he pays much attention to the authentic, and objective narrative style, cold and scientific rational way and integration of historical events of naturalism.Li jieren's "long river novel", the very child of both "local" and "world" cultures, not only reserves national foundation, but also accepts the model of foreign literature and the French realistic writing ways in the 19th century. His works realize the merge of Chinese and western literatures, but also remain his special local favors of Sichuan, which is specifically presented in his epic pursuit, distinctive realistic writing way and humorous style. The magnificent and open artistic structure and epochal spirit embody his epic pursuit; the novel historical narration, representative characters and environmental description highlight his distinctive realistic writing way; and his humorous style is epitomized in the transcending aesthetics, revealing sort of leisurely wit and tactful depth. In addition, this paper makes a brief comparison between Li jieren and Bakin, and from this we may see that Li jieren is the writer who faithfully "cope " the 19th century French realistic model, and successfully fuses his nation and personality into it in the new literary history in China. However, due to time and individual, Li jieren also has his own limitations that he cannot overcome or surpass. Nevertheless, successful or failed, Li jieren leaves his posterity valuable experience, reference lessons, and profound revelation. He himself is a bright lamp, a route marking.
