On Eastern Influence On Klimt's Painting

Gustav Klimt is representative of European Art Nouveau and one of the important figures in Vienna Secession, Austria. With a profound symbolism content and a specific decorated style, his paintings have got a different expressing effect from others'. In addition, his depiction of female subject matter and tragedy has made him a significantartist in 20 century. In the past, the study of Klimt's paintings centered primarily on Klimt and his symbolism as well as Klimt and Art Nouveau, over-emphasizing contents and meanings, with less probing into his specific painting form and the influence of Eastern art on him in the process of his style formation. The thesis will discuss the Eastern influence on his art in the following respects.The first section will explore the problems existing in the study of Klimt's paintings through the analysis of its present situation.In the second section, the different periods of Klimt's paintings as well as the influence of Chinese aesthetic concepts on his painting style will be expounded, to prove that Klimt not only drew on Eastern art in his painting style, but also was influenced by Ecistern art in aesthetic concepts. His reference to Eastern art is not groundless. It is an inevitable trend in the development of European art. Eastern , especially Chinese art has played an important role in the exchange between Eastern and Western arts, and in the development of Western Modern painting.The third section will probe into the revelation made to us by the new art trend created by Klimt's melting Eastern and Western painting, putting forward that art can be developed only by drawing on others'. However, the important thing in the development is the attitude, that is, to draw on excellent foreign culture arts on the premise of inheriting native culture tradition.
