This thesis tries to explore aspects of Vermeer's skopos theory in translation and provides vivid examples in Chinese-English and English-Chinese translation practice to illustrate viewpoints of this theory. The whole thesis is divided into seven parts. The first part is the introduction. It tells the reason why I am attracted by this theory and try to explore it: it widens people's traditional eye scope on translation methods and brings the debate on translation standards to a higher level. The second part is the literature review. This part mainly introduces points from Vermeer and Reiss. Their viewpoints include attitudes towards translation strategies, concept of translation, status and relationship of source text (ST) and target text (TT), the role of translator, and theories on text types. The third part is about applying skopos theory to the translation practice for Chinese translators. The discussion is divided according to various text types. There are informative texts, expressive texts and operative texts. The fourth part discusses factors affecting translators' choice of strategies from skopos theory's viewpoints. The factors include readers, clients and considerations of target culture acceptability. The fifth part deals with the impact of skopos theory. It includes changing the status of source text and target text, expanding the concept of translation, multiplying translation strategies and assigning new roles to translators. The sixth part talks about criticism of skopos theory. It lists three most common objections against skopos theory with Vermeer's defending. It also lists my personal views on limitations of this theory concerning their debate. The last part of this thesis is the conclusion. I draw several conclusions from the research into skopos theory, such as further research into purposes of translation, more tolerant attitudes towards various translating strategies and the impact of this theory upon relevant fields of studies.
