Study On Zhang Zhu-po's Narrative Theory

This article takes Zhang Zhu-po's Comment on "Chin Ping Mei" as its case object and studies the comments on the novels of Ming and Qing dynasties. It tries to find and arrange the ancient narrative theory of China. In the course of study, we follow this kind of radical thinking: consulting the western narrative theory system, taking the relevant concepts and categories, reading the novel text and the comment text carefully, explaining Zhang Zhu-po's comment by modern meaning.This article takes Zhang Zhu-po's narrative theory under the cultural and historical background of Chinese ancient narrative theory developing progress. From the relation of novel narration and history narration, the culture about the Buddhism and the Taoism/the culture about garden and the art of writing and painting ,these have affected and permeated the novel narration and our study isn't limited in the linguistic bonds. After studying the narrative structure/ the narrative logic/ the narrative time/ the spacial narration/ the narrative rhythm/ the narrative function and the narrative technique, we have found that the narrative theory which Zhang Zhu-po's Comment on "Chin Ping Mei" had showed is rather rich and comprehensive. He succeeded the predecessors and made a breakthrough, he affected the later profoundly too.After Zhang Zhu-po Comment on "Chin Ping Mei", people have evaluated it variously. In my opinion, we should not despise it, although it has been subjective and at his ease in some place. On the novel theory about "ways of the world", Zhang Zhu-po was unique and surpassed even Jin Sheng-tan in some extent. We could find that after Zhang Zhu-po's comment, some comments such as Zhi Yan-zhai's comment were similar with it. It is not doubtful that Zhang Zhu-po contributed Chinese ancient narrative theory, his explaining on some assign topic is still valuable today, even compared with the western narrative theory, it is superior.
