On Modern Satirical Prose

Prose literature has been an important integrant of Chinese national culture from ancient times. From coming into being, the modern press go hand in hand with the development of prose. Accompanied by development and completion of the modern press, prose style constantly brings forth new ideas in the form, function and feature on the basis of adopting the cream of Chinese classical prose, which is centralized and expressed by modern satirical prose. Modern satirical prose publishes on popular papers and slick papers, compromising features of traditional satirical literature and modern news literature, which solidifies in the late Qing Dynasty, flourishes in the early 20th and divides in 1920s.Its generation adapts to civic reading interest and becomes important aspect of the modern press to attract readers' attention; Its development and division relates to many problems of mass medium theory, such as literary supplement, popular, public space and so on. On the other hand, modern satirical prose is a special characteristics force not to be ignored in the development of modern prose, so studying on it has important significance of journalism and literature.The article includes three parts. The first part distinguishes connotation and denotation of "satirical prose", date back to its development from ancient times to modern times, redefinites on the cross point of journalism and literature, explains its emerging through studying the late Qing Dynasty social background, readers' accepting psychology and trend of thought in literature, and reappears how political literature, journal literature and civic culture expedite modern satirical prose to birth commanded by the modern press.The second part studies modern satirical prose on style angle. Author will introduce its new features in artistic intension, forms, style and language accompanied by innovation of modern literatural media, explain how satirical prose, which is the route for modern intellectuals to public speak, fulfils its duty to public speak, criticize the society and human and provide pleasure in the special cultural broadcasting atmosphere.The third part will look back on modern satirical prose's development course with the turbulent situation and completion of the modern press, which includes three periods: forming, flourishing and dividing, and reveal different features on content and form of different period.
