Background Patient falls have been identified as a significant health problem in the general hospital patient population especially the elderly inpatients. The Hendrich II Fall Risk Model (HFRM) is an individualized criterion-referenced assessment tool designed for measuring the likelihood of patient falls in hospitals. Despite the scale has demonstrated high validity and reliability in the previous researches, this study is to provide additional validity tests to determine the applicability in the Chinese hospital elderly population. Objectives To translate HFRM into Chinese and examine the reliability, validity and predictive power of the HFRM to predict patient falls. Methods The medical and geriatric units of one general hospital-Peking Union Medical College Hospital participated in the study. A convenience sample of 989 Chinese elderly inpatients was recruited sequentially upon admission in the hospital. They ranged in age from 60 to 92 years, with a mean of 66.03 years. The patients were assessed for fall risk using the HFRM on admission. Data was collected by the researcher and an assistant. To conduct reliability tests on test-retest, inter-rater and contant, construction, prediction validity. Results The field test demonstrated excellent Repeatability with an ICC value of 0.9950 (95%CI 0.9923-0.9984). Inter-rater reliability was high with an ICC of 0.9950 (95%CI 0.9923-0.9984). Content validity is excellent which CVR is 0.9333. Constructive validity is fine. Predictive validity is moderate. The scale had a sensitivity of 72%and a specificity of 69%when the cut-off point was determined at 5.Conclusions The evidence collected in this study has shown good reliability and validity of using the HFRM in assessing the fall risk of Chinese elderly inpatients.
