Luxun's novel creation always pursues the trend of realism. But investigating the Old Tales Retold, readers will detect that the exaggerated, fantastic ever weird way of imagination permeating the anthology endows the work with romantic color which distinguishes it from Luxun' s former works. His recreation of the ancient myths, legends and historical romances is the very unique point of the literary form employed in the Old Tales Retold. This article strives to straighten out the origins of this special narrative pattern, delineate the reference curve to the traditional culture, and consequently, concludes that it is the influence of the traditional culture and the creation concept of Japanese novels that exert influence on the creation of the anthology. After this necessary sorting, the article begins the intensive reading of the text, and investigates the historical culture crux of the work and finds out that it is in the confrontations between heroes (the spokesman for gods and culture) and secular mass that Luxun deconstructs the historical culture. Through the secularization of heroes, he overtures their holy position in historical culture, and further reevaluates the cultural meaning they embodied. What's more, this process also represents Luxun's critical attitude towards national traits, which is clearly revealed in the work's castigation to the so-called "nobody" of the secular mass and insensitive on-lookers. Meanwhile, the work also accomplishes the interpretation of the truth that "surrounds" the historical culture, and this follows Luxun's thoughts of "new theory of encirclement". All above mentioned points are achieved in a kind of playful yet profound new narrative form. The work also distinctly shows its own force of aesthetic form, that is, it expounds a most probable and most accurate life logic in the improbable historical surrounding, and this process is permeated with sobriety and profundity characteristic of Luxun. The last but not the least point is this article strives to seek the deeper psychology in Luxun's creation of the Old Tales Retold so as to investigate the psychological causes of his employing the new narrative style. On the one hand, Luxun must keep calm, on the other hand, he needs to rouse himself; for one thing, he has to be checked by the aesthetic laws of novel creation, for another, he needs to balance his psychology of social criticism. These are the mixed psychological states in his creation of the Old Tales Retold. Such states collide and intertwine, ending in the accomplishment of the unique style-the slippery yet magnificent and sober form. Thus, the social criticism consciousness of "for life" and aesthetic form requirements for novel run harmoniously in the work.
