In the thirties of the twenty century, on how to set up united front, a controversy about two slogan, namely "national defence literature" and "national mass literature of revolutionary war", broke out in the literature and art circles in Shanghai. The debate on slogan of literature and art involved how to hold the essence of the new democracy culture virtually. It is a very important exploration on new democracy in revolutionary camp. The process of forming the new democracy culture had been divided into three stages: sprout stage, semi-completion stage and completion stage. During the process, Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao and Qu Qiubai etc, had carried on hard exploration and Mao Zedong is the one who gathered all the useful opinions. In "On New Democracy", Mao Zedong defined the new culture as new democracy culture for the first time. At the same time, he put forward the outline of new democracy culture: national, scientific, and popular. Then, what status on earth could the debate of "two slogan" be put during the course of exploring? First, it inherited and developed the culture popular direction since the "May Fourth Movement". Second, the controversy persons had a theoretic exploration to the cultural united front. Third, "national mass literature of revolutionary war" exerted a positive influence to Mao Zedong's thoughts of "new democracy theory of culture." We can say, the controversy of "two slogans" was in a kind of position of taking over from the past and set a new course of the future in the course of forming of thoughts of new democracy culture.
