The Globe Magazine And Education Reform In Late Qing Dynasty

The Globe Magazine was a kind of Chinese journal issued by foreign missonary in late Qing dynasty. Though it belonged to preach, it was been on propagating the western culture, paid attention to report the news all over the world, often advocated reform. It was a way which China intellecturial learned and realized the west world and western learning, at the same time, The Globe Magazine would stimulated them to think China things according to the west. From the angle of The Globe Magazine and education reform in late Qing Dynasty, the article analyzed and commented reports and reviews about education and The Globe Magazine influence to China education reform. The objection is offering help for understanding the western and Chinese culture conflict, consist and development which caused by gradual eastward spread of western learning. The main body of this thesis consists of four parts.In the first part ,the thesis critized the disadvantages of China feudal education disclosed by The Globe Magazine, the magazine citied three ways: traditional education system, pedagogy content, rigid management and teaching methods, in times of traditional feudal system, education serve imperial examination system, its content only was Confucianism, management and ways of teaching lose vigor, based on which it advocated to reform the feudal education.In the second part, the journal introduced western education situation, including school type, teaching content, teaching management and education principles. The introductions offered detail things of western education system and concept. It developed Chinese view of western education and forward to accept western education.In the third part , The Globe Magazine picture a blue print of China education reform in the late Qing Dynasty, including setting new system schools, devising courseswith considering the Chinese and western culture, advocating popularizing education, making normal education well, promoting studying abroad. Undoubtedly, it guided education reform in late Qing Dynasty.In the fourth part, this thesis evaluated the education reform advocated by The Globe Magazine, involving to renew ideas, make reform atmosphere, speed the wide spreeding of western learning ,make Chinese realize the distance in comparison China and foreign countries. These propaganda promoted development of China education and accelerated the process of Chinese modernization.
