Death weighs heavily in the works of both Lu Xun and Hemingway. Their aesthetic interpretations of life and death embody the complicated inner mind and the reflections upon existence philosophy. The thesis is intended to distinguish the similarities and differences of death consciousness between Lu Xun and Hemingway under different cultural background. On the basis of the rich life experience contained in their artistic text, the thesis attempts to explore their views on individuality, life attitude and death value by means of analogy and contrast, induction and deduction, analysis and synthesis. The thesis consists of an introduction, a body and a conclusion. The introduction epitomizes their strong fear of death, artistic conceptions and aims of my study. The body is divided into three chapters. Chapter One analyses their thoughts of the dialectical relationship between death and individuality at their own angle. They both emphasize independence and dignity of an individual as death is the most private possibility of Dasein. Chapter Two illustrates their reasonable and positive attitude towards death and life with the comparison between two main characters: the passer and Santiago. Chapter Three expounds the same striking feature of their views on death value. The conclusion sums up their philosophy of death and their influence upon us.
