| As an excellent translator, Liang Shi-qiu's achievements are there for all to see. He was the first to personally translate the Collected Works of Shakespeare, as well as about 15 other kinds of western literary masterpieces. His translation reads smoothly and turns out to be faithful to the source text. However, as a result of certain reasons, it is difficult to find the location of Liang Shi-qiu in the translation history of the mainland of China. Nobody is even interested in his perspectives on translation. What people care more about is the controversy began from the dispute on "stiff translation" between he and Lu Xun in the 1930s. In fact, Liang Shi-qiu's perspectives on translation were just embodied from this controversy.Liang's perspectives on translation reflected from this controversy were mainly embodied on the disputes of three issues: 1. "rigid translation" or "smooth translation"; 2. whether literature should be associated with class nature or not; 3. whether foreign literary works should be retranslated from an intermediary language. In the following analyses of this article, I will explore the content of Liang Shi-qiu's translation perspectives and try to show how these perspectives influenced his translation activity, including processes of both his choice of the text and the methods he employed in dealing with the source text, In order to show Liang's methods of translation, I have selected examples from Hamlet, a representative piece of works completed in this period.Liang Shi-qiu's perspectives on translation put forward in the 1930s profoundly influenced all of his translations. If the impulsive and tart diction in that controversy were not considered, his perspectives on translation deeply influenced the formation of the translation system at that time. By this analysis, I hope history can give equitable and objective evaluations upon this translation master.
