This thesis consisits of three chapters. It discusses the formation, features, artistic achievements and the embodied aesthetic value of Eugene O'Neill's tragic idea from aesthetics' point of view.I. Several factors influence the formation of Eugene O'Neill's tragic idea. A. The United States is a multinational immigration country. It is the merging of various nations from all over the world and the thriving of navigation that lead to O'Neill's freedom seeking and pioneer tragic idea. B. The history of the U.S. A. society is short, but it consists of a series of war. During the tragic social negation and transition, we always see the historic development contrary to people's original motivation. The condition causes people to question and fight against the society. The social environment leads to O'Neill's daringly negative and straightforwardly realistic tragic idea. C. O'Neill's relatives resist their various misfortunes fiercely in different ways. Their basic attitude towards life intensifies O'Neill's tragic idea about pursuing freedom. D. The betraying from religious awareness and moral standard adds to the depth and persistence of O 'Neill 's tragic idea.II. Features and artistic achievements of Eugene O'Neill's tragedy. A. Stories of O'Neill's dramas about marine and society are based on real life. Tragic characters surpass themselves and the social reality by fighting and negation. Through the realistic subjects the theme of resist is always seen. B. O'Neill's drama conflicts arise together with characters' intense inner contradictions, develop through soliloquy and are finally surmounted by death and destroy at the end of each tragedy. The structure consolidates the tragic color of his dramas.III. Artistic achievements and aesthetic value of Eugene O'Neill's tragedy. A. Various tragic characters, as principle parts of tragedies, publicize their demands for the right of existence, freedom and independence; show their eager for love; defend their human dignity and go beyond themselves. All their behaviors have reached high arch. B. With positive attempts, the tragic characters make breakthrough at social reality, family bondage, national conventions, religious custom and governmentdecrees. To a certain extension, they surmount the social reality. C. The emotional strength and sexual passion that tragic characters show while striving or surpassing are powerful and irresistible. The passion that bursts out during the tragic surpassing is soul-stirringly dynamic.
