English society underwent its transition during 16-17th century. Legal norm turned into the main method to social adjustment instead of religious norm and moral norm. Meanwhile, Middling sort began to grow and go up to a powerful group in England rapidly. Thus, the common lawyers rose. In this thesis, I investigate the social basis on which common lawyers won their rise and development. Furthermore, I pay great attention to the practice of common lawyers and their extensive involvement in government. It is readily apparent through the findings that the rise of the common lawyers depended on the Middling sort largely both in social origins and in clients. Middling sort was the primary beneficiary, which perfected the social structure. And the authority of the common law was confirmed further, which laid a foundation for the society governed by law.
