Individual And Female Writing--On Chen Ran's Novel Creation

The aim of this paper is to examine the changing process from self-discovery,confirmation,and the constant producing and increasing of female subjectivity to female eapression to the world as a woman and a independent person as well,through the study of Chen Ran's context of novels,informal essays and interview.With distinct self-consciousness,Chen Ran's way of writing is also the process of the sele-experience,self-pursuing,self-examination,self-confirmation,and self-actualization.Her early writing focused on the indifinite self-seeking of young woman.The protagonists,female college students or young woman having scanty experience of life,with the puberty-characterized commotion,revolt and confusion,who were inclined to suspect and oppose the extant system,expressed their resentful sentiments and disapproval attitudes to the ludicrous and unreasonable phenomenon and turned to pursue the reasonable value and meaning of human being as self-sustenance,placed their hope on love which in their eyes was a noble,fatal and ideal matter,a pure matter,a faith,and the last fortress to protect and save themselves,and pursued dauntlessly.This phenomenon of love crazing demonstrated a certain of inferiority of contemporary woman and the weak and inadequate of the subjectivity of the female.The classical love story is nothing but a mysterious matter created in the male culture in which woman take a wrong step and land in the love trap frequently.The expose of the love mystery indicated the development of the female self-consciousness and the birth of the female subjectivity . In the 1990's,the connection of the western feminism theory and Chinese plural cultural context produced the pure feminism writing,and Chen Ran was a representative.Separating from male rights,possessing definite and conscious female awareness,standing on the pure female position,and writing the sexual rights system,Chen Ran challenged the pressure of the male supremacy,resisted the fatal of being-written,and proposed to seek and construct the female subject through the active discribe of the self-experience of life and subsistence by her pen during that period.The disconstructive and constructiveprocess fulfilled simultaneously which expressed in Chen Ran's novel .Firstly ,starting using the body narrative feminism writing marked the construction of the female existence itself in the text in the essence because woman coexist with her "body"directly and the body is the starting point of female narrative and the ending point as well.The body here refers to the generalized meaning including the sense,desire,body,sex,lust imagination and so on.Secondly,Chen Ran's novel payed more attention to the homosexual.The process from the mix of thoughts of hesitation to the clear approval on the homosexual writing in Chen Ran's stories,embodied the constant consolidation of this experience writing in author's mind,reflected the suspection and thinking on the sexual order and sexual culture and the escape of female individual from the suppress of the male social system and the active effort of self-responsibility.Thirdly,it displayed in the individual narrative.The individual narrative includes two points,one is the individuality,the other is non-individuality,namely,the transcendency which transcended the individual limits and reached others,hidtory,society and the age.The former emphasize the return of individual narrative to private daily life,in which individual and her existence emerged together,so the individual and her life possess the expressing lights.This kind of writing,stresses the truth of private life,showed in the relation among people,the age and history,and it is an expression to the world based on the experience of the private existence.The essence of this writing is the criticizing communication between the individual and the world in which the author's independent consciousness and subjective power could be displayed and the resposibility for the value reason fulfilled.Chen Ran's stories based on "the private life",and developed...
