| West Side Story is one of the greatest tragedies in U.S Broadway musicals. Its value is mainly from perfect integration of the tragic and dramatic music. Taking this as the entrance, the thesis will discuss this work in three aspects: the dramatic theme, the musical technology and the general analysis of some scenes in large scale. The first aspect will focus on the tragic character and its significance. The second will interpret some musical elements and technics which is consistently used in the musical. In the third aspect, the main intention is to find out the relationship of the music expression and the content and meaning of the drama, and try to explain how the music works to the drama expression, and then to show the Bernstein's compositional idea and artistic value of West Side Story more clearer. |
