Music Drama is a comprehensive stage art which puts music, dance and theater into a unit. It requires actors not only have an excellent singing skills and good sense of music, but also have a solid performance skill, dance skills and other skills. Music Drama performance is the important element to promote performance; the actor’s vocals also have a direct impact on the quality of the performance which is good or bad.Music Drama has different singing styles, which asks the actors to perform the sound that the role has according to the personality characteristics of different characters and the plot needs. This paper takes Tony’s aria-"Maria""Tonight""Something’s Coming" and "Somewhere" in the "West Side Story" as an example for a deep analysis. This thesis is divided into five chapters. In the First chapter, the vocal performance’s importance in shaping roles was introduced. The second chapter makes a brief analysis to the background of the "West Side Story" to understand the author’s arrangement for the main characters and personality in the play. The chapter three studies the shaping role-Tony’s performance. The chapter four analyzes the representative aria’s singing style in the ply. And the chapter five clarifies the relationship between performance and vocal music.
