Reading is a primary way for us to acquire knowledge.The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools puts forward the specific requirements of reading skills: able to predict the theme,extract the main content of text,understand the logical relationship of text,infer the meaning of words in different contexts,search information according to the key words.However,according to the questionnaire survey this paper has conducted on senior high school students about their attitude toward English reading teaching,it shows that,in the current English reading teaching,teachers pay more attention to grammar and language points analysis while neglecting students’ holistic understanding of the article,and the cultivation of students’ reading strategies and abilities.Schema is the building block of cognition and the abstract knowledge structure in human brain.Reading is that the reader activates the corresponding schema with the prior knowledge and experience,combines the existing schema in the brain with the new information of text,and then understands the new information.Based on the cognitive correlation between schema and reading,this paper starts to study the reading teaching under the framework of schema theory.This paper blends qualitative research and quantitative research together.Firstly,this paper systematically combs up the relevant literature of schema theory,laying a solid theoretical foundation for the subsequent research.After that,based on the three categories of schema theory: linguistic schema,content schema and formal schema,teaching demonstrations are carried out.With the help of specific teaching cases,this paper describes in details how to activate,construct and consolidate the schema of reading texts in class.Finally,the paper makes an empirical study on the ultimate effect of schema reading teaching.The teaching experiment lasting one semester is conducted,and the experimental class and the controlled class are selected in the teaching experiment.By means of English tests and questionnaires,the experimental data are collected.The result of data analysis shows that: schema-based teachingmode can not only stimulate students’ reading interests;it can also improve students’ English reading ability.This study has a positive effect on reading teaching.In the reading teaching of senior high schools,teachers should recognize the important role of schema theory and apply it to the process of reading teaching.It can help students enrich the necessary background knowledge during reading and achieve a good reading effect. |
