Studies On The English Poetry Translation From The Perspective Of Literary Stylistics

Although the English poetry translation has a history of more than 200 years, and has exerted a significant influence on the development of new poetry in China, it has not gained as much attention from translators as the Chinese classical poetry translation. This thesis aims to make a contribution to the systematic and scientific study of the English poetry translation by introducing literary stylistics to translation studies.The author's efforts dwell on both the theoretical and the practical aspects. The theoretical issue is approached by a brief survey of current theories on the English poetry translation, which reveals two problems. First, translators of English poetry have neglected the transference of values conveyed by linguistic components other than phonological ones for a long time. Second, there is an unjustified tendency moving towards the stricter preservation of the rhythm and the rhyme patterns of the original. Introducing literary stylistics to the English poetry translation is necessary in solving these problems. It sharpens translators' sensitivity to the thematic and aesthetic values of poetic language by providing a set of linguistic procedures that are scientific and systematic.In the aspect of practice, the author makes the attempt to investigate the stylistic values of poetic language from dimensions of phonology, semantics and syntax and demonstrates with both negative and positive examples of translation that adequate awareness of the stylistic values of poetic language is essential for the production of arendering that is functionally equivalent to the original.This thesis, generally speaking, bears the purpose of bringing a new insight into the practice and the theoretical study of the English poetry translation.
