On The English Versions Of Biancheng From The Perspective Of Literary Stylistics And Narratology

After suffering ups and downs of his life, Mr. Shen Congwen finally occupies a very important place in Chinese modern fictional history. The study about Mr. Shen Congwen and his work has become the focus point of modern literature study since 1980s; however, almost nobody has paid attention to the translations of his work. Meanwhile, so far nobody has done the research from the angle of style, which doesn't match with his honor "stylist". Based on the perspectives of literary stylistics, this thesis attempts to analyze the two versions of Mr. Shen Congwen's representative work — Biancheng from some theories of narratology and translation.In fictional translation there exists a phenomenon — deceptive equivalence. Introducing literary stylistics to the fictional translation is necessary in solving this problem. It sharpens translators' sensitivity to the thematic and aesthetic values of the original work by providing a set of linguistic procedures that are scientific and systematic.In the stylistic studies of these two versions, our first concern is its textual analysis, which consists of three parts: a stylistic analysis of lexical expression, a stylistic analysis of syntax, a stylistic analysis of the translation of speech and thought presentation. With respect to the textual structure, translators' handling of narrative focalization in the translated versions is laid special stress on.In a word, this thesis seeks to prove that literary stylistics and fictional translation can be a happy alliance by ways of analyzing the mentioned four aspects in literary stylistic and narrative view and presenting the respective solutions.
