The Research On Modern Pedestrian Street Design

Since the last decade of the twentieth century, there have been an upsurge in constructing pedestrian streets in china mainland. Amid these streets, only few can claim to have fine quality. There are the same faults in these newly built pedestrian streets, such as lacking of regional characteristics, the regardless of the real needs of pedestrian. In order to direct the design of modern Pedestrian Street, this thesis takes Shanghai city as the research subject and attempts to find out some inspirations from the excellent historic public space-Shanghai alley. The public life in Shanghai alley and pedestrian streets is the keystone of the study.With different functions, Shanghai pedestrian streets are divided into 3 kinds in the thesis, which includes commercial pedestrian street, relaxative pedestrian street and uptown pedestrian street. From two aspects of these 3 kinds of streets'-historic origins anfd development directions, the thesis analyzes the relationship between Shanghai alley and Shanghai pedestrian street. By means of polls on internet and field survey, the thesis studies the public life in Shanghai alleys and varied pedestrian streets in existence. Furthermore, based on the statistic and summing-up of the research, the thesis anatomizes the relations between the material structure, establishments and public life in alley and pedestrian street, then get the alley's use for reference to the design of modern pedestrian street. Finally, the thesis gives the conclusion that the alley's key use for reference to Pedestrian Street lies in succeeding 'alley spirit' which comes from an unique atmosphere composed by alley residents' activities and space structure adapts to these activities. Moreover, the designer should apply the 'alley spirit' to determining the 'form' of the pedestrian street. As a result, the uptown pedestrian street that have the tidiest relation with people's daily life will be the orientation of future pedestrian street .At the end of this thesis, based on the public life status quo in uptown, the author brings forward a plan for future uptown pedestrian street.
