"Suo" structure is a special phrase which is made up of "suo" and verb(including Verb Phrase) or preposition. It is very widely used in ancient Chineseand modern Chinese. In order to completely take cognizance of the grammaticalfunctions and the structural characteristics of "suo" structure, the essay adoptsthe views of syntactics, semantics and pragmatics. From the view of syntactics,the essay comes to it's own opinions that "suo" is a morphologic symbol insyntax. It can add to the beginning of a verb or a preposition to change itsmeaning or its use, particularly it is a symbol which signs a verb in attributiveplace. According to the valence theory of modern linguistics, we summarize themeaning of "suo" structure. The valence theory has been one of hot standpointsin modern Chinese for a long time, but ancient Chinese pays little attention to it.It is a try for us to introduce the valence theory into ancient Chinese by studying"suo" structure. The essay finds that the meaning of "suo" structure is closelyconnected with the valence and semantic features, the function of "suo" structureis emphasizing the absent constitution in semantics. From the view of pragmatics,"suo" structure is always used as the whole Noun Phrase, it guarantees theconciseness and well-knitted of sentence.
