First of all, this essay generalizes the development of the China's newspaper and its supplements in modern times (1872-193Os), which shows that newspaper, being unstable and slow-growing, becomes the core in public media by its technical predominance on transmission. The newspaper has been heavily tinted by political color and endowed with historic tasks for enlightening and saving the nation. These characteristics have influenced the literary reading in five aspects as followed:The first, low prices and brilliant sales made have expanded the reading public and had the classes deepened, as well as generated a mass of collective literary reading. The "follow-the-populace" habit removes the individualized comprehension. It might turn into a "rivalry" when occurring in the working places.Secondly, "mosaic" formats lead to the pre-judgment of reading in forms of locality and space. Convenient to be selected owing to the apposition for all kinds of works, newspaper brings to non-linearity reading and provides a stage of diverse thoughts spread.Thirdly, short but frequent serialized formats have changed literary reading into "snack" or "blockhead" swallow. The reading process is penetrated gradually with ideological thoughts by the temptation of serial suspense and different desires.Fourth, the apposition of literature and news brings in the marriage of their property and content that also causes expectant eyeshot of press; while the apposition of literature and advertisement leads to not only the intermittence on reading but also the visual and mental fatigue; supplementary reading now grows a kind of commodities, too.The last, the system that has fast feedback and chances of publication forces the reading of those, who want to emit, on a process of being disciplined. This essay makes use of some theories like literary transmission psychology and commonalty culture, the press history and supporting data, in order to tease and sum up the significance of newspaper in modern times on literary reading.
