Urban Context

My paper tries to reveal the different purposes and attitude in the artistic creation of Chinese painters, through the comparisons between the traditional Chinese intellectual painter and the painter soaked in the modern urban environment. The comparisons cover the painters' social and historical background, social status, social political relations, the way they realize their social responsibility, the artistic creation influenced by their living style and feedbacks they received from the public. Then fur-ther analysis will focus on the new generation from 1970s to 1980s, when Chinese reformation and opening takes place. The analysis reflects conflictions among reality and psychological impact on painter's living, learning and artistic production process. Confronting with the diversified urban context, in the artistic crea-tion of the contemporary landscape paintings, to represent a painter's individuality and attitude becomes imperative of the time and potential for development.
