The Persons Of The City In The Vicissitude

Chinese modern & contemporary literature has very close relation with the city of Shanghai. In every period of our modern & contemporary literature development, Shanghai supplies many important contents to us. So Shanghai is regarded as a very important place like Beijing for Chinese modern & contemporary literature. A lot of authors pay much passion and attention to Shanghai. The vicissitude of the city and people is embodied fully in their works. Saloons, clubs, cinemas, Western -style buildings, villas and traditional lanes form the most representative spaces of the city, these spaces are full of commercial atmosphere. With the developed of the city, "Shanghai persons" who lived in this city are endowed with specifical and abundant signification. This become a particular culture individual phenomena.This thesis select some representative authors and works in 1930s, 1940s and 1990s to analyse. By the compare of the Shanghai persons' characters represented in those works in different periods, we try hard to discover the culture connotation formed in the vicissitude of the shanghai persons, and to manifest the significant effect of the mercantile culture which build the personality of city and the persons' character of Shanghai.
