The film was born in the city, while observing and documenting the city.Since the Chinese film was shown in Shanghai Xuyuan in 1896,there wasn't the development climax in the history of Chinese film until the development of the left-wing film in the 1930 s.Shanghai,as the base for the development of left-wing movies, provides abundant urban resources for the development of left-wing movies. The left-wing progressive film playwrights also use the extremely keen artistic vision to penetrate the film into Shanghai,an international metropolis, and observe and watch the urban life experience of Shanghai from the perspective of civilians and popularization. The film consists of both the temporal art and spatial art, which indeed has authenticity, but only a kind of artistic authenticity. Therefore, the film scene or the urban scene presented by the film not only has the temporal and social authenticity, but also has the artistic imagination. The imagination of the left-wing films about Shanghai's urban image is inextricably linked to the emotions of that era,the nation, and the film playwright;all art is human art,and movies are no exception. It is mainly a kind of gaze and imagination for people who dwell in Shanghai. In other words, the left-wing movies conclude deep emotional connotations for the imaginary presentation of the city image. Thus, this thesis attempts to explore the profound connotation of the idealized imagination of the left-wing film on Shanghai's urban image through the discussion and analysis of the Shanghai city life scene recorded by the left-wing films. This thesis will explore the imagination of the idealized image of Shanghai's left-wing movies from three chapters.Chapter one analyzes the life of Shanghai in the left-wing movies. It mainly analyzes the extreme richness of Shanghai's material wealth in the 1930 s,which causes the social stratification to be serious, and the unequal social phenomenon in which the rich are richer and the poor are poorer. As a result, material repression and human alienation and the loss of social ethical orderhave emerged.Chapter two explores the pursuit of idealized Shanghai in the left-wing films, which is discussed from three aspects, humanitarian construction in the left-wing films, the pursuit of fair and just social ideals and the reconstruction of social ethical order. The last chapter discusses the artistic image of Shanghai in the left-wing movies. From the aspects of the image, portrait and film technique in the film, the emotional metaphor and symbol behind the symbolic discourse of Shanghai city image are investigated.
