The Research Of Chang-Yuan-Wu Fengbei Charitable Granary

Chinese granary system had a long history and there were different kinds, but as far as relief of disaster was concerned, the ever normal granary, the community granary and the charitable granary exist most widely and are the most influential kinds. They were Chinese traditional social security establishments and their main function was to relieve the people who suffer from disasters, so their scope and the level of social security were both limited. But in this paper, after researching the Fengbei charitable granary in Suzhou City during the late Qing Dynasty, I find out something as follows. During the modern times, not only the granary system's management had changed, but also its function of social security had developed a lot, the scope of social security expanded and the level of social security had been enhanced. All these show that with the impact of modernization ,the traditional social security system had started its process of modernization. The experience of the Fengbei Charitable Granary are beneficial to Chinese contemporary construction of social security system.
