By drawing the principles from the law of probability and statistics, adopting some theories and methods of systemic-functional grammar, this dissertation gives a comprehensive analysis on the frequency adverbs in Chinese, in order to find out the interrelations in the system of frequency adverbs and their functions. This dissertation consists of five parts.Part One includes the target, scope of our researches, the position and value of the frequency adverbs. We also introduce generally the previous studies, the methods taken in this dissertation, the sources of linguistic data.In Part Two, we divide the frequency adverbs into 5 levels on the previous semantic standard and the new form standard. In Part Three, we analyze the frequency adverbs from 5 aspects: (1) the verbs and adjectives modified by frequency adverbs, (2) whether frequency adverbs can appear in the sentences whose subject or object is humaning and non-humaning, (3) the interrelations of frequency adverbs and the three tenses, (4) whether frequency adverbs can appear in negative sentences, (5) whether frequency adverbs can appear in positive and imperative sentences. In Part Four, we analyze the categories of the verbs and adjectives modified by frequency adverbs, and draw the following conclusions: frequency adverbs can only modify the dynamic verbs, static verbs that can be changed into dynamic ones, and the dynamic adjectives. And we can set up a continuous system among the 5 levels of frequency adverbs. In addition, we analyze the differences of frequency adverbs' negate between the inside and outside sentences. In Part Five, we find out the event conjecture expressed by the probability adverbs corresponds with the statistic of the frequency adverbs. The frequency adverbs must appear in the truth conditional sentences, the probability adverbs must appear in the subjunctive sentences.
