Confucianism and Taoism, occupying a pivotal position in thetraditional culture of China, influence the life of ancient scholars farand wide. The trend—scholars step out their houses and view thegreat country with personal involvement, constitutes a mainstreampicture in the Tang Dynasty and is unavoidably affected byConfucianism and Taoism in the Tang Dynasty. Their varied travelingmeans, diversified traveling purpose, and wide coverage of spacesopened the eyes of scholars and purified their souls, thus makingthem possess an unprecedented personality attribute and making TangDynasty become a great dynasty. The research on the achievements in the fields of politics, economics, society, education and literature of the Tang Dynastyabounds, but little effort is spent on tourism. Tang Tourism is,relatively speaking, a new orientation for research. Another scholar,Shang Youjing, in his work—"Chinese Tourism Culture"presents theconcept of Chinese tourism and the cultural connotation in it,especially in the respect of man of letters. The characteristics anddivision of tourist literature of Tang are introduced in Feng Naikang's"Chinese Tourism Culture Analects". Other specialized books relatedto this subject, which are unanimously not deep enough, include:"Tourism in Chang'an of Tang Dynasty" by Wang Xiaoru,"Investigation on the Spring Outing in the Heyday of Tang Danasty"by Wang Yongshun, "On the Literati and the Construction of TouristCulture in Tang Dynasty"by Lv Lifei, and "Outing of the Man ofLetters in Tang"by Jin Ying and Ruo De. With initial reference to the complementary doctrinalconstruction of Taoism and Confucianism and their influence on thescholar tourist in the Tang Dynasty, this paper analyzes the traits and 3manifestations of the scholar tourism flourishing in Tang, probes intoseveral typical tourist activities and their connotations, and ends withthe effect exerted to the society of Tang Dynasty by the scholartourism which merges Taoism and Confucianism.
