Film and TV play translation (FTPT) is a new kind of translation that is not only constrained but also helped by the pictures on the screen. Apart from several common points shared with other kinds of translation, it has its own features. In this thesis, visual constraints and stylistic constraints are described in a systematical way. Nida's equivalence principle with its emphasis on the reader's response is especially useful for Film and TV play translation. So several principles which can be applied to film and TV play translation are suggested after my examining the problems in film and TV play translation by studying Nida's equivalence theory.Being lack of enough previous literature in this field, this thesis can only be a theoretical exploration. There is still much to be done in the future for further development of the theory of film and TV play translation. If this thesis can be of a little use for those who are working hard in this field, I will be greatly satisfied.
