Exploration Into E-C Film Subtitle Translating Strategies

With increasing cultural communication between China and western countries, the popularity of foreign TV and film products is leading to a relatively new field that matters to the overall appreciation from Chinese audience. It is the audiovisual translation. This thesis conducts an in-depth analysis on subtitle translation which is the leading type of audiovisual translation by taking examples from the popular American TV series Sex and the City. Through the literature searching, the author highlights the generalized subtitling constraints theories from several masters and the corresponding translation strategies applied in subtitling translation. Seasoned with examples from Sex and the City,the author goes on exploring the feasibility of the summed-up strategies and points out some unsatisfactory translated versions and puts forward revised translation versions of her own. One separated chapter is also devoted to shed light on the pros and cons in the translation of culture-related items and expressions. Lastly, a final conclusion is drawn on the whole thesis, emphasizing the importance of subtitling which works as a"bridge"between different cultures.
