A Study Of The Contextual Impact On Interpretation And Interpreter Training

Interpretation serves as an important means in present international exchanges and cooperation in diverse fields.Interpretation research and interpreter traininghave been on the rise and tended tO flourish in order to meet the demand in sOcietv.Studies on interpretation from different aspects and points:of view have been carriedout.namely psychology,sociology,pedagogy and cognitive study,etc. As Malinowski suggests that utterance"becomes only intelligible when it isplaced within its context of situation."(refer to Jiang Yanmei,1998)Interpretation,inessence a communicative activity,also only takes place in the special context.DuetO its extemporariness,interpretation is more dependent on the context.Studv 0f therelation between context and interpretation and interpreter training should gain itsdue attention in this field. Exploring the history and present situation of interpretation researches.based on an analysis on the nature of interpretation as a way of communication and a review of studies on—context by different schools,this thesis discusses contextual impacts on interpretation theoretically,and presents a well-designed experent t0 demonstrate how the central pan of context,i.e.interpreter'S background knowledge, and information on situation,influences interpreter'S performance.As the theoretjcaI and experimental discussions verify that context plays a significant role in interpreters'understanding and interpreting,finally,some feasible and effective suggestions axe put forward to improve interpreter training,so that more competent and qualified interpreters can enter this profession.
