The issue of "intertextuality and translation" is a new research area of translation studies. The classical Chinese novel of Sanguo yanyi has strong intertextuality, which makes it necessary and desirable to observe the translation of this novel from an intertextual perspective. Intertextuality may bring about a lot of complications in translation, but full consideration of intertextuality in translation can help the translator to effectively overcome the immense cultural barriers and achieve a higher degree of cultural exchange. This is further confirmed by the brief criticism on Three Kingdoms, the translation by Moss Roberts, in this thesis, which analyses how some typical categories of intertextuality are dealt with in this translation, summarizes some striking features of this translation and concludes that this translation by Moss Roberts is a both comprehensible and faithful one that verifies the importance of intertextuality in translation with a view to conveying cultural connotations and improving translation quality.
