The ubiquitous media has a lasting but deep impact on forming of gender. Media moulds out ideal men and women, and leads people in actual life to imitate and to change themselves. To a great extent, the media is making our gender. One of the great subjects of studying in women's history is the transition of the modern gender concepts. Undeniable, the national-democratic revolution of China has brought women the equality that they yearn for a long time. However, the singly politically visual angle is helpless to researcher's to know modern women's thought and life better. We need a wider field of vision. Therefore, this dissertation beginswith a famous modern female periodical-Women's Magazine found by TheCommercial Press, discusses what kind of model it have created for women, as well as the transition of gender concepts were showed by these models. This dissertation has been divided into 3 parts:Firstly, to analyze Women's magazine from a few aspects that magazine manager, editor, author as well as reader, and found the social background of the magazine making female models. By statistical sampling and classifying on the magazine in researching period, the basic view of Women's magazine about female problem has been deduced : just make new and old be in harmony.Secondly, analyze the female models that Women's magazine showed to readers since two aspects respectively: at beginning, how women (knowledge women mainly) who lived in the initial stage of the Republic of China to think the social roles them acting, and how they combined the social viewpoint of value to individual enterprise. Then, how editors and authors(male mainly) construct "ideal " female through the works of literature and art just like novel. Compared with women who seeked social admission actively in real life, fictitious female sample presented more deeply inherent contradictoriness. It is because of the antagonistic relations between the traditional gender concepts of the Confucianism and the enlightenment thoughts trend. Finally, to analyze a few main powers of transition of the modern gender concepts: the traditional gender concepts of the Confucianism, feminism and nationalism. Without necessarily realistic foundation, feminism has lost vivosphere quickly. The traditional gender concepts of the Confucianism also have been absorbed into nationalism trend sprung up abruptly with the unceasing intensification of national crisis. The social role of modern Chinese women have been interpreted and instructed just under this background. However, the transition of the modern gender concepts has been delayed, when the goal of female liberation has been won with the help of government. Thus, up to today, the argument about the female "mechanical image " still last endlessly. The investigation of Woman's magazine will be helpful for us to seek balanced point between traditional and Western gender concepts, and accelerate the establishment of new gender concepts.
