A Research On Jiang Xi Women(from 1939 To 1942)Magazine

In 1934,the Kuomintang government and Chiang Kai-shek proposed and implemented the "New Life Movement".Xiong Shihui,then chairman of the Jiangxi Provincial Government,responded positively to the movement by setting up the Jiangxi Women's Life Improvement Society(later changed to Jiangxi Women's Guidance Office)and making the magazine Jiangxi Women as the official journal.The journal initially aimed to publicize " the sense of propriety,justice,integrity and honor " and cultivate "good wives and good mothers".However,with the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War and the establishment of the Anti-Japanese National United Front,its original purpose cannot meet the requirements of the time and the changing situation.Therefore,Xiong Shihui invited Xiong Zhi,Lei Jieqiong and other progressive people to take charge of the women's guidance office.As Xiong Zhi and Lei Jieqiong took office,they carried out drastic reforms and hired a group of the Chinese Communist Party members and progressive people to be the editors of Jiangxi Women.As a result,Jiangxi Women had taken on a new look and became increasingly influential.The journal was not only published in Jiangxi,but also in neighboring provinces such as Hunan and Hubei.It had become a true magazine for women themselves.After the revision of Jiangxi Women,there were altogether 8 volumes and 32 issues,which mainly included the columns of public opinion of the time,women's developing tendency,lectures on women's issues,women's work situation,family and children care,and literary supplements.The three successional editors in chief of the magazine were all Chinese Communist Party members,and most of the editors and writers were Party members or progressive people(including progressive young people).Jiangxi Women carried out reports on new family life,women's education,women's liberation,women's work situation in various places,women and the Anti-Japanese War.Many articles in Jiangxi Women expounded and discussed about women's liberation and women's movement,which emphasized the need to strengthen women's education in order to awaken women's consciousness and to break the feudal oppression and traditional view of women,actively pursuing women's independence and liberation.At the same time,under the background of the Anti-Japanese War,lots of articles in Jiangxi Women stressed on the association of women's liberation and national liberation,pointing out that women's liberation can only be realized in the pursuit of national liberation andnational liberation must be completed after women's liberation.Therefore,Jiangxi Women took making public realize the Anti-Japanese War and motivating women to participate in the war as one of its main tasks.The magazine disclosed the atrocities,especially against women,committed by the aggressors through criticizing fascism.And it reported the facts of the battleground,and publicized the view that China is invincible.It aroused women's hatred towards the aggressors and patriotism and confidence towards the Anti-Japanese War,which encouraged women to participate in the war,for instance,helping front-line soldiers,rescuing and looking after wounded soldiers,making military uniform shoes and making donations.
