Mr. Qu Wang-li is an important figure in the cultural history of Shandong. Born in Yutai County of Shandong Province, Mr. Qu worked in Shandong Provincial Library and "National Library" in his early life. He moved to Taiwan in 1948, and got posts successively as dean of the Chinese Department of Taiwan University, director of the History and Linguistics Department of "Central Research Institute", academician of "Central Research Institute" and visiting professor of Princeton University of America, Toronto University of Canada and Nanyang University of Singapore. As a world famous Chinese scholar, Mr Qu made great achievements in the study of Confucian classics, history, paleography, catalog edition study, critical interpretation of ancient texts, textual criticism study, ect. Mainland scholars paid little attention to Mr. Qu because he went to Taiwan before liberation. Books and articles about him are particularly rare to find in mainland China. To make some amendments, this article takes full advantage of these original materials: Mr. Qu's 42 scripts collected by Qu Shi-zhao, descendant of Mr. Qu, 215 letters and 321 pieces of rubbings, photos, calligraphies, paintings and works donated to Shandong Library. Shandong Library established Qu Wan-li Commemoration Hall for this reason to reserve these materials. In 2002, to commemorate thisprestigious scholar who devoted his whole life to the cause of library and academics and his academic achievements, Collections of Commemorating Qu Wan-li was published by Qilu Press co-edited by Shandong Library and CPPCC of Yutai County. 11 included 2121 etters between Mr Qu and his friends and 30 various commemorating articles, among which all letters were publicized for the first time with most precious value.Based on the above materials the author read attentively Complete Works of Qu Wan-li, Collections On Study and some relevant books on Chinese culture, adopted a method of special topics, carefully combed his academic life and relations between his friends and him, discussed his academic thoughts and research method and his major academic achievements, demonstrated several important stages which greatly influenced his life and study, preliminarily argued his academic status and gave his academic chronological table. Owing to the author's limited academic level, there must be some errors. But after so long a time of vigorously proofing and criticizing, this article strengthens some weakness in this field more or less. This article combs Mr Qu's origin of thought in a unique way, proves that his research method is descended from the Dual Proof method initiated by Wang Guo-wei, underlines his outstanding contribution to this field by visiting experts from library and catalog edition study circles.Once working as director of Special Collection Department of Shandong Library, Mr Qu overcame unthinkable hardships and took various ways to protect ancient Chinese books, and made great contribution to the cultural undertaking of Shandong. Therefore, as a cultural worker in his hometown, the author makes some shallow discussions and researches here with a feeling of paying respect to Mr Qu. The author hopes that this article can positively contribute to deepening research on Mr Qu, accumulating the enthusiasm on Chinese study and strengthening cultural and academic exchange across the Taiwan Strait.
